GPRS
GPRS stands for "General Packet Radio Service".
It is a mobile data service available to users of GSM mobile phones
(GSM or "Global System for Mobile Communications" is
the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world, with
over a billion currently in use, by people across more than 200
countries).
GPRS is a "packet-switched" service,
which means that many users share the same transmission channel,
only transmitting when they need to send data. The advantage
is that they get the full bandwidth for each transaction (and
none when they don't require it). In addition GPRS transmission
can be billed per kilobytes of information sent or received,
and not on a per minute basis. Thus when you are playing a game
of chess you will only be billed for the move transmission, not
the entire time you are engaged in playing the game.
You should contact your mobile
phone provider for further information on GPRS. If you have purchased
or upgraded your cellphone recently chances are that GPRS is
installed and running on your set. Just try it out – install
Fritz Mobile and log into the server for a game of chess.
