Like to try Fritz Mobile?

Free access to Playchess on your cellphone

ChessBase is currently testing new software that will give you direct access to the Playchess.com server on your cellphone. You can log in, watch games, follow broadcasts, even play against other visitors. This is possible using our client software Fritz Mobile, which is currently in the test phase.

What is required on your cellphone:

• First of all you need to make sure you are using a GPRS capable cell phone, and that the GPRS service with your provider is properly configured.

• Further your cellphone needs to have Java capability. Specifically it requires MIDP 2.0 (the Mobile Information Device Profile provided by Sun Microsystems for the use of Java on devices such as cell phones and PDAs) or CLDC 1.0 (Connected Limited Device Configuration, a Java application targeted at pagers and mobile phones).

  

You probably do not have to worry about either of the above requirements, since all modern cellphones have GPRS and Java capability enabled. If you are not sure about it, read the manual of your cell phone or contact your provider. Alternatively you can simply try following our instructions and install Mobile Fritz. If it works, you know your cellphone has met all the requirements.

This is how to install the software on your cellphone

• Open the browser of your cell phone. This is usually to be found under "services" and allows you access to Internet pages.

• Type in the URL http://fritzmobile.com/wap. You can do this using the keypad of your cellphone.

In most cases your cellphone will be automatically recognized by the download site. If not you will get a page where you can enter your cellphone type manually. Note that if your cellphone type is not recognized by the Fritz Mobile server, but it meets the general requirements, it will be added to the server list very quickly.

After your cellphone type has been identified the download can begin. The entire process should not take longer than about 3-4 minutes. Once the download is complete, you will be able to use the client software and log in on the Playchess.com server.

Access to Playchess.com

This is very simple and intuitive. You can log in as a "Guest" or use your current Playchess account. Type in your user name and password. This will not affect your normal access to Playchess from a PC with Fritz.

Feedback

We have set up a special feedback form which you can use to tell us whether your cellphone access to Playchess was successful or not. In the latter case please be very specific and tell us exactly where things went wrong. You should also specify exactly which cellphone and service provider you are using, and of course which country you are in. We are also interested in suggestions for improvement and additional features. We cannot, however, at the current stage provide any guarantee that the software will work on your cellphone.
